Gift Of Life : You Can Save Life

May 1st, 2009

Life is precious.

Too precious, to be lost to an organ failure.
But millions have lost their lives when a vital organ failed to function in their body. The fact is, medical advances in the field of transplant immunology, surgical management and organ preservation have made the transplantation of vital organs possible.  Thus providing a viable approach to the management of diseases that cause irreversible organ failure. So, all you need to do is pledge for donation and help precious lives from being lost before their time.

What is organ donation?

It means that a person pledges during his lifetime that after death, organs from his/her body can be used for transplantation to help terminally ill patients and giving them a new lease of life.

There are two ways of Organ donation:

  • Living related donors:-  only immediate blood relations (brother, sister, parents & children) can donate as per the Transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994. Living donor can donate only few organs, one kidney (as one kidney is capable of maintaining the body functions), a portion of pancreas (as half of the pancreas is adequate for sustaining pancreatic functions) and part of the liver (as the few segments that are donated will regenerate after a period of time) can be donated.

  • Cadaver Organ donor:-  can donate all organs after brain death.

What organs and Tissues can be donated?

The major donor organs and tissues are heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, kidneys, eyes, heart valves, skin, bones, bone marrow, connective tissues, middle ear, blood vessels. Therefore one donor can possibly give gift of life to many terminally ill patients who would not survive otherwise.

How quickly should the organs be donated?

Healthy organs should be transplanted as soon as possible after brain death from the donor to the recipient.

Who can be a Donor?

Anyone, regardless of age, race or gender can become an organ and tissue donor. If he/she is under the age of 18 years, then the consent of parent or legal guardian is essential. Medical suitability for donation is determined at the time of death.

Who can give consent for organ donation after brain death?

Donors who have during their lifetime consented for organ donation in writing in the presence of two witnesses (at least one of whom is a near relative,) should carry their donor cards with them and also express their wishes to their near and dear ones. In case of no such consent or donor pledge form was filled before death, then the authority to give consent for organ donation lies with the person lawfully in possession of the dead body.

Is there any charge to my family for organ donation?

No, there is no charge nor payment for organ/tissues used in transplantations.  Organ donation is a true gift.

Whom to Contact : Organ Retrieval Banking Organization, a nodal centre for the country, has been set up at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, with a purpose of encouraging organ donations, fair and equitable distribution and optimum utilization of human organs.

This organization is maintaining the waiting list of terminally ill patients requiring transplants, donor registration, matching of recipients with donor, co-ordination from procurement of organs to transplantation, dissemination of information to all concerned hospitals, organizations and individuals, creating awareness, promotion of organ donation and transplantation activities.

CHECKING NAME & POLLING BOOTH ADDRESS IN VOTER LIST

April 30th, 2009

1.   CHECKING NAME & POLLING BOOTH ADDRESS IN VOTER LIST
All those who have submitted their voter registration forms, directly or through the campaign team, between Jan and Mar 2009 should expect their names on the final supplementary electoral rolls.

The time gap between release of these final voter lists (online version) and polling day for your city is shorter than what was anticipated by us. On account of this, we will not be able to send you personal updates on voter registration status & polling booth details, as was informed to you earlier. We deeply regret this.

However, you can still check to know your voter status & polling booth information in the following ways:

a) Check original hard copy of the final voter list with your ERO, 7 days before election day

b) Online search at the website of your state Chief Electoral Officer 2-3 days before election day

You will find your polling booth address on the voter list in the section where you find your name registered as a voter. You can even check with your neighbours since most people in an area normally belong to the same polling booth.

“Every child should be in school and enjoy childhood” maybe a dream for most but for M.V.Foundation it is a reality they strive to achieve.

April 30th, 2009

“Every child should be in school and enjoy childhood” maybe a dream for most but for M.V.Foundation it is a reality they strive to achieve.

Based on the non-negotiable principle that ‘no child works and every child attends full time formal school as a matter of right’, MVF has been working towards abolition of child labour in all its forms and mainstreaming them into formal schools, for over a decade now. From its humble beginning in three villages in 1991, it has now spread its philosophy far and wide.

Currently MVF is implementing the program directly in the Ranga Reddy, Nalgonda, Kurnool and Adilabad districts in Andhra Pradesh covering over 2500 villages and in the city of Hyderabad. MVF also provides technical support to various governments, NGOs and the MVF resource persons have worked in Assam, Bihar, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu. MVF has provided technical support to NGOs and Governments in Nepal, Central America, and Africa. Its presence is among some of the most backward areas in terms of HDI and in all these areas MVF monitors around 5,00,000 children on a daily basis.

Earlier, MV Foundation worked in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Mahbubnagar, Chittoor, Kadapa, East Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Anantapur, and Warangal districts of Andhra Pradesh as a direct implementing agency. It now continues to keep in touch with the program through the Child Rights Protection Forums and offers technical support to them.
Way back in the early nineties, MVF pioneered the concept of the Residential Bridge Course (RBC) camps to prove to the community, parents and the children that poverty is not the only cause for child labour and to disprove the myth that older children cannot study. The RBC concept, the pedagogy, the methodology and the curriculum have been adopted by many NGOs and Indian Government policies.

It has also initiated programmes related to right to health and nutrition of children below 6 yrs of age, rights of adolescent girls and right to safe motherhood.

Quick facts:

  • 6,00,000 child labour mobilised out of work and into fulltime, formal, government day schools.
  • 50,000 child labourers have been put through Bridge Course Camps and 30,000 Education Activists mobilized to liberate children.
  • 80,000 youth volunteers and members of CRPF protect child rights.
  • 25,000 adolescent girls in schools and 8000 child marriages stopped.
  • 1500 Gram Panchayats are child labour free.
  • 1500 Gram Panchayats review child rights through the health and education subcommittees.
  • 50,000 children mainstreamed to formal schools through RBCs.
  • 25,000 bonded labour released and sent to schools.

Hello world!

March 11th, 2008

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) (created 1956) is a medical college and hospital in India, and is an autonomous institution funded by India’s Union Government. It is located in Delhi.

It is considered as the best medical college and public hospital in the country[1][1][2] and is globally recognised for providing low-cost medical care to a large number of patients.[3] Most of India’s VIPs (Legislators, Ministers, Judges in particular) utilize AIIMS as their primary hospital, which contributes to ensuring the maintenance of high standards. [4] [5] Recently, medical professionals from various Asian, European and American countries have begun coming to AIIMS to train, as the exposure to various diseases attained there is rare in most other institutions. [6].

It is one of India’s Institutes of National Importance, a distinguished category of premier institutions like the IITs, IIMs, Indian Statistical Institute, ICAR etc.
